Surface Electromoygraphy (SEMG)SEMG uses electrodes placed on the skin to measure the electrical activity of the muscles when contracting (similarly to the way the heart is monitored). This form of treatment is used to document muscle function in the assessment and treatment sessions.
Low Back AssessmentThe assessment of the low back consists of three parts:
Low Back TreatmentTreatment for the low back consists of two parts:
BRS Treatment SessionThe average treatment session begins with a SEMG assessment of the low back to monitor progress. Following this the patient is asked to complete a series of movements on the MyoRack under the supervision of a trained therapist. The patient shall expect to bend forward, to the left, to the right and backwards while fully supported by the machine and within a pain free range of motion. Patients Using This Program Have Said"I work on the loading docks, which entails driving a fork lift and lifting pallets. About 9 months ago, I lifted a pallet and heard a pop. I had severe low
back pain and numbness down my right leg. An MRI showed a bulging disk in my lower lumbar. The neurosurgeon said that I was a surgical candidate. I did not want to go
under the knife and was referred to [use the back machine]. I have not missed a day of work due to my back, the numbness is gone from my right leg and at this time, I
am about 95% pain free. You don't know how lucky I am." "If it wasn't for [the back machine], I don't know where I would be today. I know wouldn't be working here because the low back pain just hurt too much. My job
is to work in a lean cell, which means I have to be on my feet all day and moving. I had lifting restrictions for about a month but other that that, I was able to do
my job. My fear was having to live on pain medications. I continue to do my stretches everyday. I am so thankful." When I first hurt my back, physical therapy didn't work so I was told surgery was my last option. I never got better and was out of work for five plus years. After
finally returning to work, the back pain started to gradually get worse again. I started [using the back machine] the relief was almost immediate. I was able to return
to my old job and have been great ever since. I am able to golf again!"
Home Exercise Program (HEP)Each individual's exercise program is designed specifically for that person to facilitate the therapy between sessions. The HEP is completed on a daily basis and is integral to balance, strengthen and increase flexibility of the low back.
